The West Texas Pumpkin Trip You Need To Make This Fall

If you're putting together a West Texas fall checklist, there's one place that absolutely deserves a spot on it: Floydada.

Floydada has long embraced its reputation as the Pumpkin Capital of the U.S., and when fall rolls around, they don't just sell pumpkins. They basically turn the whole town over to them.

One of the biggest reasons to make the drive is Assiter Punkin Ranch & Pumpkin Patch, located just outside Floydada. This isn't just a roadside stand with a couple of bins out front. It's a working farm with pumpkins in just about every size and color you can imagine.

You've got the traditional orange pumpkins, but you'll also find white, red, green, tiny ones, giant ones and plenty of unusual varieties that look like they were specifically designed for your front porch.

And in Floydada, you'll notice they often spell it "punkin." That's not a typo. It's part of the local tradition and personality of the place.

Make A Day Of It In Floydada

The other big reason Floydada belongs on the fall checklist is Punkin Days happening on October 10th. The annual celebration turns the town into a full-on autumn festival with vendors, food, games, pumpkin decorating, contests and plenty of reasons to take a ridiculous number of pictures.

That's really what makes Floydada worth the trip. You can certainly drive over, grab a pumpkin and head home, but why rush it?

Make an afternoon out of it. Walk around. Check out the pumpkins. Eat something you probably don't need. Take a few fall pictures and enjoy one of those small-town West Texas traditions that feels completely right for the season.

We don't get mountains covered in orange leaves around here, and sometimes West Texas fall lasts about 15 minutes. So when you've got something this perfectly suited for autumn practically in our backyard, you might as well take advantage of it.
