Thank you for loving pets enough to read this.

I am both happy about these events and a little concerned. Let's start with item #1. Lubbock Animal Services is doing free dog adoptions now through July. This is a very good thing and might just be the key to getting these pets into loving homes.

I certainly don't want anyone to get a "free dog" just to get a free dog. A pet is still a responsibility, and that responsibility lasts long after the adoption fee is gone. With that said, maybe this is that little nudge that lets you know it's time for a new buddy.

Sometimes The Right Pet Finds You At The Right Time

Oftentimes after losing a pet or not knowing how to properly train one, people can just give up for a while. I can tell you that while I've loved all of my pets, it's the pack that I have now that behaves the best.

Sometimes it's the pets, and sometimes it's you.

That's okay, sometimes it's a learning curve and it takes a little time. Every animal teaches you something. You learn more patience, more understanding, and maybe a little more about yourself along the way.

I will say that barring some kind of abuse or neglect, time at your place is better for the animal than time at the shelter.

Shelters Need Help From The Community

This is nothing against any shelter. The people working there care about these animals and are doing the best they can. It's just the unavoidably chaotic nature of shelters. The noise, the activity, and the constant changes can be very stressful for animals.

This is also why foster homes are so important.

If you can't make a long-term commitment to a pet, just taking one into your care temporarily can heal both of you a bit. You get the companionship and they get the comfort of a home, even if it's only while they wait for their forever family.

A Better Future For Lubbock Pets

Lubbock Animal Services has been working hard on improving their services, which is no small feat because they've been underwater and crowded from the start.

With more spays and neuters, more fostering, and a few more people taking pets in, we can get control of this situation.

These animals don't need perfect people. They need patient people.
