Whether it's an ER visit, or a planned procedure, going to the hospital can be an intimidating experience.

We trust that the medical professionals who are involved in our care are doing everything as precisely and carefully as possible to prevent any complications that could arise from our visit.

But how can you know if a hospital makes the grade? The Leapfrog Group.

What Is The Leapfrog Group?

The Leapfrog Group is a nonprofit patient advocacy organization that has existed for 20 years as "the movement for transparency, safety, and quality in health care [to] protect patients now and well into the future."

The group uses a series of metrics to grade hospitals A through F, with some exceptional hospitals achieving the rank of Top Hospitals. You can see the Texas hospitals that are the best of the best here.

How Does Lubbock Fare?

While Lubbock has some specialty hospitals, I was only able to find grades for our two major hospitals- UMC and Covenant.

If you wonder which is better, the answer is "both." They both achieved a good "B" grade from The Leapfrog Group during their last ranking.

Let's Dig Deeper

Why did they get B rankings? Let's take a look.

First, you should know that the metrics (which are further divided into specific subcategories) include Infections, Problems With Surgeries, Safety Problems, Practices To Prevent Patient Errors, and Doctors, Nurses & Staff. Each category is further divided into specific areas.

UMC did very well in the Doctors, Nurses & Staff category. This means UMC's patients felt that they were listened to and cared for by UMC's staff.

You can do a deep dive on UMC  here.

Covenant did very well in Safety Problems. That means Covenant took exceptional care to prevent falls, bedsores, and other injuries that can happen at a hospital.

You can do a deep dive on Covenant here.

Lubbock is lucky to have two dependable hospital options, right here at home. Here are 9 Texas hospitals that only got a "D" ranking:

9 Texas Hospitals Get Dismal "D" Rating For Patient Safety

According to The Leapfrog Group, which has collected patient safety data for over 20 years, these were the worst-scoring Texas hospitals for patient safety for Fall 2024.

The Leapfrog Group uses many criteria to produce these scores- everything from how well doctors communicate to how often they leave dangerous items inside patients after surgeries.
