Anyway, if you're concerned about your pipes bursting when it gets extra nippy, here are a few things you should know:
1. Water pipes used to be made of very rigid metals, like copper, making them much more susceptible to freezing and cracking.
2. Today, plumbers have begun moving to mainly plastic pipes. If your house is newer, chances are, your pipes are plastic. Plastic pipes expand when water freezes, which keeps them from bursting.
3. Not ALL houses come with plastic pipes, and it can be pretty expensive to have your old ones replaced, BUT, in the long run, it's definitely a good idea. You don't want to risk ruining your carpet or nice hardwood floor!
Call your plumber if you're worried about your pipes, and good luck over the next few days! It's going to be a doozy. I'm crossing my fingers I don't end up having to take the stairs again this year!
