Have you ever called 911 for something kind of stupid?

I have.

I know, when I was a teenager, I probably called the Lubbock Police Department 4 or 5 times to report hearing scary noises in our family home while my folks were on vacation. They never found anyone in there (thank goodness), and I'm pretty sure they were fed up with me after the second call. The creepy sounds of an old house settling were foreign to me when we moved into it, and it took a lot to get used to them. When I think back on it, I feel pretty silly, but at the time, I was truly frightened.

I feel better about calling them after reading about the 911 calls placed by a pair of hikers in a state park back in 2019. Let's get into it.

The Texas Hikers and The "Growl"

Around 11:30 pm on June 21st, 2019, a police officer at Government Canyon State Park received a missing persons report from the San Antonio Police Department. The 911 caller was located somewhere in the park and reported they were being actively followed and growled at by an unknown animal.

They were so afraid of the growling creature that they'd even climbed up a tree for safety. The caller told police they believed it could be a wild pig, which are most often very dangerous and aggressive.

Park police officers went to her last reported location, but couldn't find her. They were, however, able to reach her by cell phone. The hiker begged them to please hurry because the pig was still nearby and they kept hearing its vicious growl.

The officer told the woman he would turn on his sirens and to listen for them. When she was unable to hear them, the officer asked her to send them her location according to her cell phone data. The officer then hiked in the direction of her location, finding her and a male hiker up a tree.

The female hiker warned the police that the pig must be close by because she had just heard a growl shortly before the cop's arrival.

The "Wild Pig"

Not long after that, the officer heard a vehicle drive over the rumble strips on Glam Road, not far from them. He noticed how her body language changed when they heard the rumble, and asked her if they believed that was the scary wild pig, to which they both nodded.

He explained to them that the sound they were afraid of was simply rumble strips from a nearby road.

The hikers were incredibly embarrassed by their mistake, but the kind officer reassured them that the unknown can be pretty terrifying and that their reaction was surprisingly common. It must not have been his first rodeo with rumble strips freaking out park visitors. Ha!
