Is Partnership With Patrick Mahomes Worth Changing Texas Tech Colors For?
The short version of this is, yes.
New Colors?
Texas Tech Athletics has released pictures of the jerseys Texas Tech will wear against Colorado. The jerseys represent an even closer tie with the merchandising and branding that former player Patrick Mahomes brought to the table with Adidas. They are being called the "Galvinized" strategy uniforms. They are indeed sharp, stylish and 100% make a statement. My first thought was, "Cool, but that's not red and black".
The Actual Colors
Texas Tech adopted the school colors in 1926 and truth be told, the school colors are actually scarlet and black. To clarify, scarlet is actually one-quarter of the way between red and orange. Interestingly enough, the "red" on these new uniforms does look a lot closer to actual scarlet, but that is not black. Instead these uniforms are "dark grey" (because there's no such thing as "light-black"). Also, the "Red & Black" was usually counterpointed with white, where it looks more like aluminum here (but I have to say the helmets look awesome).
It's Worth It
Again, if Patrick Mahomes puts his stamp on the uniforms we should probably just go with it, but as a 40+ year resident, it's a tiny bit jarring. We've been taught "Red & Black" just like we've been taught "Wreck 'Em Tech" and "Raider Power". It's going to take a half second to adjust to a...let's say...."less dark" black. One more item, the pics you're seeing were taken in a fashion that make them look a little darker than they are.
Will It Become "A Thing"?
It's going to be very interesting if this branding sticks. Doe's it mean we'll have "gray out" nights at the stadium? Will the branding bleed over into other sports? It seem like since football is usually the most recognizable team sport that we'd want somewhat of a cohesive look. All of this provides some very interesting things to ponder, none of which is more important that our deal with Patrick Mahomes. It's just odd, and a little different.
