West Texas country music fans, mark your calendars — because one of our own is coming home. Texas Tech alum and country music star Josh Abbott is headed back to Lubbock this fall for a special fan meet-and-greet at the Dairy Queen on University Avenue. It’s a homecoming celebration that mixes local pride, good music, and plenty of Dilly Bars.

A Red Raider Returns Home

Josh Abbott, front man of the Josh Abbott Band, has deep roots in the Hub City. The Texas Tech grad has never forgotten where it all started — from his days performing in local venues to becoming one of Texas country’s most recognizable voices. In fact, his hit “Victory Bells” is a love letter to his alma mater and a go-to anthem for Red Raiders everywhere!

Abbott’s career has earned him some big honors over the years. He’s a Texas Tech Distinguished Alumni and was inducted into the West Texas Walk of Fame in 2018, joining legends like Waylon Jennings, Buddy Holly, and Roy Orbison.

Meet Josh Abbott at Lubbock’s University Dairy Queen

The event takes place Friday, November 7th at Dairy Queen, 6925 University Ave, from 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m with a public event from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The first 100 fans in line will get to meet Josh Abbott, snap a photo, and even enter a raffle for signed merchandise. Fans will also score a free Josh Abbott Band koozie and a complimentary Dilly Bar to sweeten the deal.

You can also expect appearances from Raider Red, the Texas Tech Pom Squad, and Dairy Queen’s lovable mascot, Curly. It’s the perfect way to kick off a Red Raider game weekend — country music, community spirit, and ice cream.

That’s What We Like About Texas

Josh Abbott teamed up with the Texas Dairy Queen Operators’ Council back in 2022 to refresh the famous jingle “That’s What I Like About Texas.” It’s been a hit ever since, helping a new generation of Texans fall in love with a tune that’s been around for over 25 years.
