Austin, Texas Is Still Weird

The slogan in Austin, Texas, at least among Austin originals, is "Keep Austin Weird". After spending a few years there in the 1980's, I'd have to say they are on target. Sure big business has moved in. South By Southwest is now a clusterfluffy of badges, pay-to-play and every other corporate nightmare you can think of. All of the big chain restaurants and big box stores are the norm. Yes, things seem kind of normal on the surface but Austin is still where weird lives.

Old Austin Lives On

Dig beneath Austin's shiny exterior and you'll find the city is still weird at heart. One of those core bits of weirdness is scheduled for later this month. This year will be the 60th Anniversary of "Eeyore's Birthday Party" at Pease Park. Let's start with the fact that the party is free, so the turnout is, let's just say, very eclectic.

Eeyore's Birthday Party In Austin Is All Vibe

Let's start with the fact that you're encouraged to dress up, with bright colors being the ideal choice. Then, bring something percussive so you can join one or more of the massive drum circles (some larger than 100 people). Non-amplified instruments are also encouraged. You can expect flow artists, jugglers, and you're encouraged to have "an open mind". There's much dancing and merriment, and if you're not getting the "hippies in the park" vibe yet, I'll just go ahead and say it.

Austin Has Been Celebrating Eeyore's Birthday A Long Time

As for the origin of the fest, it was to celebrate Winnie The Pooh's sad friend who thought everyone missed his birthday. As for it's origin, some claim 1963, but some documented information says 1964 (neither of which adds up to just 60 if you're counting).  I guess none of that matters when you're in the moment. Eeyore's Birthday Party runs from 11:00 a.m. through dusk at Pease Park this Saturday, and is again, free. The event is now run by "The Friends Of The Forest Foundation", and they're always looking for volunteers to help before, during, and after the party.
