There are basically two kinds of people in West Texas:

People who frequent Slaton Bakery religiously...

...and people who don't know it exists.

Roughly 15 minutes southeast of Lubbock sits the tiny town of Slaton, home to one of the oldest bakeries in Texas. Slaton Bakery traces its roots all the way back to 1923, withstanding the Great Depression, wartime rations, chain restaurants, ever-changing food trends, and all the ridiculous low-carb diet crazes folks have ever come up with.

Impressive, right?

One of the coolest things about Slaton Bakery is that they actually helped introduce pre-sliced hamburgers and hot dog buns to the state. Wild! It's hard to imagine a time before sliced bread.

Popular Goodies

They are widely known for their Vanilla Wafers, and even took first place in HEB's Quest for Texas Best. They are magic, dude. Honestly, after trying them, you'll probably never buy another brand to use in your banana pudding. Heck, you might even polish them off before you start making the pudding. They are that good. Their thumbprint cookies also have a cult-like following, and for good reason.

But really, the bread is the soul of the bakery, y'all.

Made With Love

Slaton Bakery is a place that feels really special because it's so local. In this modern world, baked goods often arrive in frozen boxes from a distribution center, and they lose their luster. Everything you go home with from Slaton Bakery feels personal, hand-made, and familiar, like something you'd snack on in your grandma's kitchen, or find at a church potluck.

People in Lubbock defend Slaton Bakery passionately. My coworkers obsess over it. Someone on Reddit called it "the finest bakery in the world," and I think that's pretty dang accurate.

Do they have the best bread in Texas?

That depends on who you ask.

But, if you're asking people from my neck of the woods, the answer is a resounding "yes."
