The Top 5 Things You Can Be Bit Or Stung By In Lubbock
Lubbock has a mess of critters and flying insects that would love to ruin your day. We're going to go through some of the stings and bites.
We are not here to discuss rattlesnakes or any mammal that may want to sink it's teeth into you. We're going to get into the creepy-crawlies that make take offense at your presence in Lubbock.
1. Scorpions
I've been stung by scorpions 13 times, with the latest over Fourth of July weekend—right in the bicep. A scorpion sting doesn’t sneak up on you. It starts with a small pinch, then explodes into a white-hot burning sensation that lingers for 20 to 30 minutes. It’s intense, sharp, and unforgettable.
2. Wasps
Wasps are deceiving. They buzz around like they’re confused—but don’t be fooled. Their sting is quick, sharp, and just about rivals the pain of a scorpion. The difference? It’s more of a needle jab, and the burning doesn't last as long.
3. Bees
Most people know the feeling of a bee sting. Compared to wasps and scorpions, it’s milder—maybe 50% of the pain. The sting is short-lived and usually fades quickly.
4. Ants
This one’s the real nightmare. Thankfully, I haven’t been bitten—but a friend of mine has. He didn’t feel a thing at the time, but the aftermath was horrifying. Brown recluse venom can cause necrosis—your skin and muscle tissue can literally rot away.
5. Brown Recluse Spiders
If you do get stung or bitten, don’t expect much from a clinic unless you’re having a serious reaction. Most places won’t give you antivenom or extract the venom—they just monitor symptoms and treat reactions if they develop. For the most part, you're on your own unless it escalates.
