This Saturday promises to be absolute chaos, and if you live in Lubbock, you already know why.
I’ve always said, “Nothing good happens after 2 a.m.”—though, truth be told, I’ve never really followed that advice. I’m a bit of a party tank—slow to start, but once I’m rolling, there’s no stopping me. And this weekend, the entire city might be in that same mode.
We’re calling this one “The Game of the Year.” #8 BYU takes on #9 Texas Tech, in what could end up being the first of two epic showdowns. Remember, the top two teams in the Big 12 square off again later in the season for the championship.
The Perfect Storm Brewing in Lubbock Ahead Of The BYU/Tech Game
The pot is already simmering. Hundreds of college students are camped out for tickets and prime seating. “Rumor” has it that beer and spirits are flowing freely, meaning by Saturday morning, we’ll be dealing with a large, sleep-deprived, slightly hungover crowd ready to explode with Red Raider energy.
Add to that the flood of alumni and boosters flying in from across the country, filling every hotel room, restaurant, and rental car in sight. Then, sprinkle in the local residents—some thrilled, some just trying to buy groceries without getting stuck in traffic—and you’ve got a recipe for mayhem.
Zero Hour: The 2:30 Meltdown This Saturday In Lubbock
Kickoff is at 11 a.m., and college games typically run about three to three and a half hours. That means between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m., Lubbock will hit “zero hour.” Crowds will pour out of Jones AT&T Stadium, lines will stretch around every bar and restaurant, and the city’s pulse will be pounding like a bass drum.

This is the kind of day that makes you love Lubbock—and also makes you want to hide from it. Either way, buckle up. Saturday’s going to be one for the books.
