It can't be easy to sit and watch your life tik-tik-tik away.

However, that is exactly what is happening to 24 inmates of the Lubbock County Detention Center, who have sat in detainment, awaiting either the outcome of the judicial process or to be transferred into a more permanent destination- prison.

Perhaps the uncertainty is even worse than the waiting.

These folks who have sat at LCDC for literally years are mostly faced with very serious and violent charges, from aggravated assault to sex crimes, robbery, and murder.

Some were offered no bail, while some have bail that is set so high that it would be impossible for friends and family to raise the funds.

Some have a laundry list of charges, perhaps denoting a pattern of behavior and a long-term criminal lifestyle, while others might have just made one tremendous mistake.

I shudder to think that any of these people, who have not yet been convicted, may be innocent and languishing behind bars.

Or that there is an extenuating circumstance- if such a thing is even possible- that they had no other option to do what they may have done.

Remember: all of these people are presumed to be innocent until it is proven otherwise, and remember also that we've all made mistakes and errors in judgment, although it is unlikely you have to this degree...

Otherwise, you'd probably be sitting there alongside them, watching the clock.
