The Emotional Support Objects Lubbock Residents Depend On
Living in Lubbock means learning very quickly that people aren’t your only support system. Objects step in. Objects show up. Objects never cancel plans.
I mean, am I right, or am I right?
Let's get into this...
First and foremost: the hoodie. Not a cute one. A thick, emotionally loaded hoodie that smells vaguely like fabric softener and survival. It’s worn year-round, including summer, because wind is a way of life here. That hoodie has seen things. It knows your secrets. It also probably belonged to one of your exes who will never be getting it back...
Then there’s the space heater, which becomes a family member every winter. You name it. You move it from room to room like a sick Victorian child. When the power flickers, you whisper reassurances to it like it can hear you. (I take mine to work. My toes are extra toasty.)
Lubbock residents are also deeply attached to iced drinks in cold weather. Thirty degrees outside? Still holding an iced coffee. It’s not about temperature. It’s about control. If the environment won’t cooperate, at least the drink will.

The vehicle deserves honorable mention. Not even the driving part, just sitting in it. The car is where you decompress, cry a little, finish a song, or sit in silence before going inside. Sometimes for a concerning amount of time.
And finally, chapstick. We don’t use it. We depend on it. Lose it and your whole day unravels. Buy a new one and immediately lose that too. This is the cycle.
