Is Lubbock Actually Friendly or is Everyone Here Just Faking It?
Everywhere you go in town, strangers smile at you, hold the door open for you, and make small talk with you. When you're in Lubbock, Texas, you get a sense that people around here are extra friendly.
I've lived in Lubbock the majority of my life, and I've got to say, people do seem rather kind here, especially when compared to all of the other cities in Texas I've visited. Why is that? What's the deal with Lubbock being so friendly? Are people from this area especially nice, or is everyone just faking it with a little game of go-along-to-get-along?
Friendliest City in America
Texas Monthly once called Lubbock "The Friendliest City in America" based on a study by some Ukrainian software engineers that found people here say "Good Morning" on Twitter more than any other city.
I'm not sure if greeting people online in the morning is a great indicator of how friendly the city is, but I guess it's not a terrible thing to be known for. I do know, for a fact, that you can say "Good Morning!" online each day and still be a terrible person. Take, for example, my ex-boyfriend. Big time meanie. Nice on the internet.

Mind Your Manners
I think a lot of the reason we are called "friendly" here simply comes down to minding our manners. Most of us were taught to keep our mouths shut if we don't have something nice to say. That doesn't mean we are inherently nice. It just means we have been taught to shut the f*** up and keep comments to ourselves.
Being nice doesn't mean just pretending to like someone in public and then trash-talking them behind the scenes. I think a lot of Lubbock is doing that, but what do I know? I was always taught that the thoughts and private conversations of others were none of my business.
Road Rage in Lubbock
And, while we're on the subject of being nice in Lubbock, what about Lubbock drivers? We do not have a great reputation for being the kindest of people behind the wheel, which is strange, because we have almost zero traffic. I guess I've been pretty lucky in that department. I haven't dealt with many rude Lubbock drivers personally. Are we that mean on the road? Or is that just a rumor we like to perpetuate because we are bored with nothing else to complain about?
What Do You Think?
So, what is it? Are we exceptionally friendly in Lubbock, or do our good manners and Southern hospitality shine more brightly to people who are new to our city? I'd love to know what you think.
