Lubbock Is One Step Closer to a Competitive Electric Market
Lubbock Power & Light has filed its official 12-month notice to ERCOT, which puts them one step closer to the retail market.
KAMC News reports that back in February 2022, both the Lubbock City Council and the Electric Utility Board approved LP&L to move into a competitive market. By notifying ERCOT, LP&L now will be transitioning in 12 months.
Matt Rose, spokesperson for LP&L, said that the City of Lubbock would be the first in Texas history to volunteer into the retail competitive electric market. Once LP&L makes the transition, it won't be a provider any more. Instead, they will focus on maintaining the electric grid.
"We will own and maintain the local grid. So whoever you choose to get your power from, from across the state of Texas, our job and our main focus will then be to reliably and efficiently deliver that power that you have chosen to your home and that’s the role we will play," Rose said. "It’s very important for our customers to know that once we make this transition, LP&L will play an important role in maintaining the grid but we will not be an option in terms of a power provider any longer. Our customers each and every one will have to go decide where they want their power to come from."
In the next few months, LP&L will begin work on educating its customers on the process of shopping around the electric market. LP&L says that customers could start shopping around by Fall 2023.
