Can You Keep a Broken-Down Car in Your Lubbock Yard?
Have an old, broken-down car out front that's been sitting there since the Bush administration?
I'm not talking about junk...
I mean, the project you've been meaning to get to.
You're definitely going to get that thing up and running. Some day. Probably.
You've already watched 16 YouTube videos about how to fix it, so, I mean, you're basically a mechanic at this point.
But, really, can you keep that junky old car on your property without getting in trouble? Let's take a look at what the City of Lubbock says about it!
Can You Keep a Broken-Down Car in Your Lubbock Yard?
The short answer?
Not necessarily.
Lubbock has very specific rules regarding what it considers to be a "junked vehicle." According to the city's code, your vehicle just might fall into that category if it exhibits the following features:
- wrecked
- dismantled (fully or partially)
- discarded
- inoperable for 30 consecutive days on private property
There Are Some Exceptions...
If the car or truck is totally enclosed inside a lawful building and is not visible from the street or other property, it's a non-issue. Also, certain types of antique or special-interest vehicles can qualify for an exception if they are properly maintained, aren't posing any kind of health hazards to the public, AND aren't in public view.
So...
The 1987 Buick that's been sitting in your driveway for 6 months with no tags on it and a family of squirrels living inside just might become a problem before you have the chance to make it a project.
What's Going To Happen?
If it's an issue with the city, you'll get a citation and a 10-day notice of violation. Your case could even go to a public hearing where they could order the vehicle be towed. You don't want any of that!
Luckily, if you just want rid of the old cruddy vehicle, the city will tow it for you at no charge when they come by for an inspection.
