Despite their origins as a joke band created for Halloween, Lubbock's Whips N Kisses have earned their spot in Lubbock local rock royalty.

Fans of 80s rock and fans of unadulterated fun have partied with Whips for 14 years. The group has decided to hang up their spandex and wigs, but they're not leaving without one final party with their fans.

This Saturday, August 6th, 2022, Whips N Kisses will play their final show and the venue that served as their home base over the years: Jake's Backroom on 50th & Slide.

I recently spoke with Doug Stapp, a member of Whips N Kisses (and also the owner of the best record store in the world), about the final show:

Our little joke ended up getting booked all over the place, playing to thousands of people over the years, hopefully making people smile or get terribly drunk for four hours a night... the entire cast of Whips truly cannot thank everyone enough for their support and everything they've done for us over the years.

Their last show is to benefit one of their own, Lexxi Steele, AKA Ben Vasquez. Every penny raised from the show is going to Ben to help his battle against cancer. If you'd like to make a donation in honor of all the fun Whips has brought you, that would of course be appreciated, and you can do so at the show.

Don't despair, 80s rock in Lubbock isn't going anywhere. The band's other project The Ducks will continue on, just without Ben and without all that hair flair.
