Cars lined up for eleven blocks in Amarillo as a brand-new Long John Silver’s opened its doors. The sheer excitement was undeniable. Amarillo showed up in force, much like Lubbock does any time a new franchise rolls into the Hub City.

Originally, I intended to focus this post on Amarillo’s overwhelming response. But that quickly shifted after I decided to swing by one of Lubbock’s own Long John Silver’s—the location at 50th and the Interstate this past Saturday.

Now, the bad news:
Sunday was its last day.
Sunday marked the end of the line for that 50th Street location, which is now scheduled for demolition. Word is that a new Long John Silver’s is planned for that same spot, but whether or not that happens is still up in the air.

For now, that leaves Lubbock with just one Long John Silver’s—on 4th Street. And honestly, it could use a refresh itself. On a positive note, some of the standout crew members from 50th are expected to shift over to the 4th Street store. If that’s true, it’s good news for fans of the brand. This team clearly cares about service and quality.

The Amarillo turnout is a reminder:
You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.
