With an average of $3.95 per gallon here in Lubbock, folks are feeling the pinch at the pump (I'd still advise you fill up here; the state average is a whopping $4.09, and $4.60 in Brewster County!). I'm spoiled with my hybrid, but i recently filled up the work truck- for right under $100!

Gas Is High, But Is It The Highest Ever?

Nope. Memorial Day Weekend just likes to kick folks in the teeth, I guess. Last year, gas prices were much lower- we were saving a dollar a gallon compared to this year, which is probably why it seems so significant.

However, in 2024, gas was about the same price it is now for the holiday weekend, and in 2022, it hit its historic high for Memorial Day weekend at $4.09 (statewide at $4.20!). Remember the good ol' days of 2021 when gas was under $3 this time of year?

Ways To Save

I always use my United Rewards to save on gas (up to $1.00 a gallon will have you partying likes its 2025), and plenty of others have gas discounts as well. You can also sign up for rewards through apps like Upside, which offer rebates. Wholesale clubs usually also offer discounted gas to folks who are members.

Stay alert to posted prices- sometimes its just a matter of going across the street or down the block to save yourself a couple bucks (just don't run out of gas doing it).

Gas prices are unlikely to go down significantly anytime soon, but I'm betting we do see a dip on Tuesday (well, at least that's what I'm hoping for anyway).
