Lubbock Named One of the Most Pet-Friendly Cities—Here’s Why
I'm probably just as surprised as you are at this one.
Lubbock Overperformed
Let's start with the fact that Lubbock wasn't ranked that high in "pet friendliness", it just did loads better than expected. In fact, of the three main metrics we did really well, but one metric drug us down. This is another Wallethub survey and it's heavy on the research so prepare for us to unpack this.
Where We Placed
Lubbock was listed as #39 out of 100 cities in the survey. If it were another topic, I might not view this as favorable, but for a hot, dry, West Texas town, it's a pretty decent score. The three main metrics were "Pet Budget", "Pet Health & Wellness", and "Outdoor Pet Friendliness". These metrics are compiled with answers to several questions, for instance "Pet Budget" is Vet Care+Pet Insurance+Minimum Pet Provider Rate (and they are weighed to prioritize one over another).
Where We Excel
Lubbock apparently loves to treat it's pets. In this particular category we came in all the way at #6! That's a stellar showing by the Hub City. For "Pet Health & Wellness" we hit an okay #60. It was in the category of "Outdoor Pet Friendliness" that Lubbock brought up the rear with a #91 ranking. This category has more to do with dog parks and dog shows than the fact that it gets too hot to walk your dog, but I wouldn't have expected us to do well here either.
So there you have it, Lubbock is neither "Pooch Paradise" or "Pet Hell". We land somewhere in the top/middle and that's not so bad for a dry West Texas Town.
