Lubbock Police Release Identity of Man Killed in Shooting

Friday afternoon, Lubbock Police were called out to a residence in the 2100 block of 90th Street after a shots fired call was received around 4:20pm.

When police came upon the scene they found one person killed. The deceased individual has been identified by Lubbock Police as 54 year-old Chad Read.

According to Lubbock Police, there was a "...verbal altercation between Read and another man related to a domestic incident that turned physical." The shots were fired shortly after the confrontation.

As of Saturday evening, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting death and the investigation has been turned over to the Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit of the Lubbock Police Department. Also, as of Saturday evening, Lubbock Police have not released the name of the person, or people, involved in the confrontation with Read and have not identified the person who fired the shots that killed Read.

Over 10 years ago, Read had served a federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to embezzling funds from a fitness club in a scheme with his ex-wife.

In a December 2009 press release, the U.S. Department of Justice described the embezzlement scheme, "...Chad Read admitted in plea papers that from June 2004 to December 2006, he and his then wife, Emily Read, embezzled money from a group of health fitness clubs. Emily worked as a bookkeeper for a fitness health club in Lubbock and for related clubs in Corpus Christi, Texas, and in Lawton and Tulsa, Oklahoma. The club names and their ownership interests changed from time to time, however, they were generally referred to as the Reaction Fitness Clubs. Chad Read assisted her in laundering more than $110,000 of the illegally obtained funds. Emily Read also passed counterfeit notes to a variety of retail stores in the Lubbock and Highland Park, Texas, areas."

Read lived in Lubbock County at the time of his death.
