The holidays are meant for celebration, but for many people in recovery, they can also be a time of stress, temptation, and loneliness. Fortunately, Lubbock’s sober community is strong and supportive, offering plenty of ways to stay connected, healthy, and committed to sobriety during the season. Whether you’re newly sober or years into recovery, you don’t have to go it alone. And I want you to know that I am very proud of you, and that I believe in you.

Why The Holidays Can Be Challenging for Sober Texans

From family gatherings to office parties, alcohol often takes center stage during the holidays. Even well-meaning friends or relatives can unintentionally pressure someone in recovery to “just have one.” Recognizing these triggers and preparing ahead of time is key to protecting your sobriety and mental health.

Additionally, the holidays can be haunted by bad experiences and unpleasant memories. Alcohol will certainly not help with these, I can promise you that.

A message for the non-sober: DO NOT offer "just one" to a sober person. It's not friendly, it's not funny, and it's not helpful. Be a REAL friend instead.

These spaces offer understanding, accountability, and community, which can be especially helpful during high-stress times like Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Practical Tips to Stay Sober Through the Season

  • Bring your own non-alcoholic drinks to gatherings (or find the mocktail menu at the restaurant/bar you are at; many places have them with phenomenally delicious drinks!). Or, you can always go the sparkling water/ Topo Chico route.

  • Have an exit plan for uncomfortable situations. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO LEAVE!

  • Stay in touch with your sponsor or support group.

  • Prioritize rest, nutrition, and exercise.

  • Remind yourself why sobriety is worth protecting. Because you are loved and you are so very worth it.

Staying sober during the holidays isn’t always easy, but it is absolutely possible. Lubbock’s recovery community offers strength, structure, and solidarity for anyone committed to their journey. This holiday season, remember: joy, peace, and connection don’t come from what’s in your glass; they come from the people and purpose around you.
