The Lubbock Police Department announced Friday, October 8th that a man who allegedly chased another man with a metal pipe the month prior had died.

KAMC News reports that police were initially called to the Indiana Village Apartments in the 700 block of North Indiana Avenue on September 21st. There, a witness said that 45-year-old Christopher Mendez intended to assault another man, Arthur Pinion, with a metal pipe.

The witness claimed to have been in a dating relationship with Pinion and a former dating relationship with Mendez. They said that Mendez was running toward Pinion and shouting at him, and at some point Mendez told Pinion to get into a vehicle. Mendez got the upper half of his body into the vehicle, but Pinion got out and ran. Mendez ran after Pinion again, and that's apparently when shots rang out.

On arrival, officers located Mendez with multiple gunshot wounds. He was found at a residence within walking distance from the scene. Pinion had left the scene before officers arrived.

Mendez was transported to University Medical Center that night. He was pronounced dead more than two weeks later on October 8th. Charges were not filed due to Mendez still being in the hospital.

An investigation is ongoing.
