NASA Mathematician Depicted in ‘Hidden Figures’ Passes Away
NBC News has reported the passing of 101-year-old NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, who was depicted in the 2016 film Hidden Figures.
According to Wikipedia, Johnson created the calculations of orbital mechanics which were critical to the success of the first U.S. spaceflights along with subsequent missions.
NASA made the announcement on Twitter Monday morning during the last week in Black History Month.
In 2015, President Barack Obama presented Johnson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work as a pioneer in space science and computing.
She also attended the 89th Academy Awards, during which Hidden Figures was nominated for Best Picture.
The country will surely mourn the loss of this astronomical lady of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math), but her legacy will live on forever in our history.
