Over two dozen dogs and puppies from Austin made their way to Chicago this week to be housed by PAWS Chicago volunteers, who kindly opened their hearts and doors to help out furry friends that were displaced due to recent major flooding disasters across the state.

The Trip

Their journey to Chicago included a flight to Waukesha, Wisconsin, where they were then driven the remainder of the journey by Eileen Johnson, a PAWS Chicago volunteer.

Johnson said the animals arrived "whimpering at first" after a long day of flying, as most of them were dirty from making messes in their carriers while onboard. She called the group of dogs and puppies "a pretty good bunch," and said that they had plans to fatten them up and get them healthy enough to adopt. Intake records show the dogs range in age from 8 weeks to 4 years.

The Goal

The main goal in moving the dogs from one shelter to another, clear across the country, is to give the organization time to clean up the Texas shelters that were in flood zones so that they will be able to make more room for other pets who are still unfortunately out there alone, displaced from their families.

How To Help

It's incredible to see the way this organization cares about animals. Putting a bunch of dogs on a plane, driving them across the US, and making extra room when there wasn't much to begin with has likely been no small feat. Let's give them a hand, guys!

If you have space in your home to foster a pup in Texas, right now is a great time. Contact your local shelters and ask how you can help today.
