Don’t Miss the Last Taste of Watermelon Season
Watermelon is a fleeting thing. Don’t miss your chance.
The world is a clusterfluffy of complete chaos, and sometimes something as simple as a watermelon can change your mood.
I’m probably way too proud to tell you that the last two watermelons I picked out at a Lubbock United were absolutely perfect. They were juicy, sweet, and had none of that weird gooshiness you sometimes get in parts of a melon.

Those watermelons were memorable, too. Not only were they perfect, they were perfect after coming in from the hot summer sun. And I’m telling you this as a candy freak and a certified chocoholic: every slice was better than dessert.
Even better, one of them was on sale for five bucks. For five bucks, you’re getting about 40 watermelon spears. Try doing that with any other dessert.

I’ve gotten pretty good at picking them, too. I look for that spidery gray webbing on the outside and a nice yellow field spot where the melon rested on the ground while ripening. Apparently my system is working.

Watermelon season is running out. In Texas, it generally starts winding down around the beginning of October.
So get one while you can. If I can’t convince you to celebrate watermelon Texas-style, maybe the Watermelon Queen can.
