In the cold months your ceiling fans should be spinning clockwise (the same direction your clock goes). You should also flip the fan over to it's lowest speed. By doing this, your fan is sucking up the heat from the room and distributing it around. It's probably not as effective at heat distribution as the other direction is for cooling, but it does help. What does not help is leaving your ceiling fan rotating counter-clockwise, which will push a cool breeze towards the floor.

It can be hard to figure out which way your fan is turning until it starts to slow down. That's okay, because you want your fan to come to a complete stop before you switch directions. While it is moving slower and slower you should be able to track the direction it's currently spinning. You may even find you didn't have it going in the proper direction in the first place. Resist the urge to slow the fan with your hands. You could do damage to both your hands and the fan. After it's completely stopped, push the switch in the proper direction. Most switches mirror the airflow, meaning if you push the switch up, it will pull air up, and if you push the switch down it will push the air down. Again, not all are this way, but most are.
