Texas is a lot of things—some good, some bad—but after a string of poor rankings, the Lone Star State finally has something to celebrate.

In a new WalletHub survey, Texas was ranked as having the 8th best economy in the nation. That’s solid news, especially considering the scope of the study.

The report analyzed three key areas: Economic Activity, Economic Health, and Innovation Potential, each broken down into numerous metrics. WalletHub is known for its rigorous methodology, and their results are widely respected, even by those who disagree with the results.

Texas Dominates in Exports

Texas stood out particularly in the Economic Activity category, landing at #4 overall, helped by a #1 ranking in Exports Per Capita. The state also placed 10th in Median Household Income, reflecting solid earning potential.

Massachusetts topped the list, largely due to its strength in tech innovation. Texas’ longtime economic rival, California, landed at #4. California actually ranked #2 in Economic Activity, and #3 in Innovation Potential, but was near the bottom at #47 in Economic Health.

On the other end of the spectrum, Hawaii ranked surprisingly low at #49, with West Virginia and Iowa finishing at #50 and #51 respectively (D.C. was included, bringing the total to 51 entries).

What's Next for Texas?

While Texas still faces challenges, this positive economic ranking is a strong sign of progress. Hopefully, this momentum will inspire even more growth in the state’s future. If we can just improve those "Quality Of Life" stats, there will be no stopping the Lone Star State.
