According to the U.S. Consumer Protection Agency, every year, thousands of Americans are seriously injured by fireworks, and a few are killed.

As a fireworks enjoyer myself, I would never tell you to forgo your 4th traditions; however, being aware and mindful of the devastation a firework can cause can help prevent unnecessary injuries.

Sometimes, injuries are caused by negligence or foolishness; however, there is always the possibility of a freak accident, even with professionals.

Texas Man Severely Injured, Losing Hand In 2024

Last year, Zach LaRocque of Longview, Texas, lost one hand and a portion of one arm after lighting a rocket artillery shell near Thanksgiving. He had the fireworks stored since the 4th of July. He also received severe damage "to his abdomen, intestines, face, and eyes," according to FOX 26.

Texas Former Firefighter Killed And Four Others Injured In 2023

On the morning of July 4th, 2023, one man was killed and four more were injured in Gilmer, Texas, at an event venue. Former firefighter Jared Maddox was preparing a fireworks show when an accident occurred, causing the deadly explosion. He was licensed to operate pyrotechnics, according to CBS 19.

One Texas Man Dies After Lighting a Firework On His Head in 2022

A San Antonio man died after he had been drinking and mishandling fireworks. According to KSAT news, "he decided to light a mortar-style firework from on top of his head. Police said the firework exploded from the bottom of the tube, piercing the man."

How To Stay Safe With Fireworks In Texas

As you read, the causes of fatal fireworks accidents can be due to mishandling or just freak accidents. Obviously, the bigger the fireworks, the greater the chance for serious injury; however, even sparklers send people (primarily children) to the E.R. every year.
