Texas Tech Football Deserves Better Game Coverage
I was going to skip over this for competitive reasons, but it's time someone said something.
It's Bad
I have a very busy Fall. If I'm to keep up with Texas Tech Football at all, it's with a quick peak at the score online or a bit of the radio broadcast while I'm headed to the store. What I've heard is nothing but hot garbage. It's trash, and the University deserves better.
Who's To Blame
Let's back up and say that it is apparently no fault of the local carrier (radio station). I'm told that the quality of this broadcast is due to the network that feeds it down. I'm also told that even the local commercials are uploaded to the network, then sent back. What comes back is a tinny, ear-grating, fatiguing awful experience.
It Got Worse
This week really pointed out a lot of flaws because not only is the sound bad, the game was terrible and someone made the ridiculous choice to put an announcer on that was suffering some type of malady that made it sound like he was a depressed person rising from the grave. The host could have taken the day off with the rest of the crew easily picking up the slack for a week.
The History
I have produced Texas Tech games before, and guess what? They were slicker than whale-snot. It's really not hard to do. I can't believe the University hasn't pressured the network for a better, more professional sounding product. When tons of money and the University's image are at stake, the broadcast shouldn't sound worse than the farm report.
Local
I'm not going to let the local affiliate off the hook either, many of the local spots sound like they were recorded "on-site" with inferior equipment. I could be wrong about this, but they add to the real amateur sound of the broadcast. It's terrible that so many people want to support the team and they're saddled with this poor product.
Is This Fair?
Yes I'm with "the competition" (kinda, I'm a music station) but everyone reading this knows exactly what I'm talking about. Think about it, It's so bad that I'm with the competition and I'm not afraid of you turning off my station to turn on this mess because I know you'll be back. Tune into a local high school game and tell me that it doesn't sound better than Tech's current radio product. This network needs to take a little more pride in Texas Tech sports.
