The Police Motto Should Be ‘To Protect And Serve’

I can't believe I'm going to take this one on again. I'll also say if you already know where I'm going with this, then there's no point in reading on and getting mad. Putting "In God We Trust" on police and emergency vehicles has NOTHING to do with faith and everything to do with trying to provoke people.

This issue has popped up again after the Texas Attorney General issued his opinion that the phrase can be used on police cars. I can read article after article and blog after blog and it is obvious. Police are putting "In God We Trust" on their cars not to celebrate their walk with the Lord, but as a poke in the eye against those who have authority over them.  Now, for those of you still with me, what does "In God We Trust" have to do with policing? It does not explain their mission or the reason we pay them to do their jobs. It's like a plumbers motto being "Because Bicycles Are Good". It's not relevant to what they do or what we need them to do. And if you want to take things to extremes, if they really believe that policing is their Christian mission, then how are they any different from the Clerics that enforce religious law in Muslim countries?

The police have found a loophole, they can put "In God We Trust" on cars because it's our "national motto". Some have even gone so far as to claim that the phrase isn't religious, but patriotic in nature, even though the word GOD is in the sentence.

At the end of the day, I have no idea what these police departments are thinking. They're welcome to put whatever they want on their cars, but they should be looking for things that unite communities and not divide them.  The Christian religion is the majority of the U.S., not the entirety.  Even among Christians, there are those who know damn good and well that this is being done just to thumb their nose at those at what they view to be political correctness that is out of control.  The police should be above this infantile behavior.
