That video above, courtesy News West 9 in the Permian Basin, shows the family of Bryce Hoppel going absolutely bananas after he qualified for the Olympics in the 800 meters at the US Track and Field Trials. Hoppel took third place in the race to secure his trip to Tokyo.

Hoppel ran track at Midland High before heading to the Kanas Jayhawks to run in the Big 12. He clocked a time of 1:44.14, which was his best of the season. He joins Clayton Murphy and Isaiah Jewett on Team USA running the 800.

Hoppel isn't the first Midland High alum to make the 2021 Olympic team. Swimmer Natalie Hinds also joined Team USA to compete with the relay team after finishing 4th in the women’s 100-meter freestyle during the Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha. Hinds has been training professionally in Georgia following an All-American career at the University of Florida.

There are even more qualifiers with local ties. Fred Kerley had an excellent career at South Plains College and will now test the waters in Tokyo for a shot at the title of World's Fastest Man. He ran a 9.86 100 meter dash to qualify for Team USA.

Former Red Raiders legend Sally Kipyego will be running for Team USA after winning a Silver Medal for Kenya in 2012.

Tamyra Mensah-Stock wrestled at Wayland Baptist, and will now wrestle in Tokyo as part of the women's 68kg group. After recently dominating the NCAA, Ruth Usoro will join Nigerian Olympic Team to compete for a medal in the triple jump.

There are also several athletes like Trey Culver, Bernard Keter and Marquise Goodwin all still trying to qualify for the Olympic team.
