This Texas Drink Just Took Over The Number Two Spot In America!
Texas just got some more braggin' rights!
A Win For The Lone Star State
Texans love to brag about how "Everything Is Bigger In Texas!" This time, it sure is. The best part is that thing is now one of the biggest in the entire U.S.A. While everyone out there was fighting "Cola Wars", one of the major brands of cola was out-flanked by a Texas original.
History Of The Winner
By now you've figured out we're talking about Dr. Pepper. Straight out of Waco, Texas, Dr. Pepper was first served in 1885. Let's put that in historical context: that was the year that Mark Twain published Huckleberry Finn. That was also the year of the Statue Of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor. Dr. Pepper is actually older than number one, Coca-Cola.
Back To The Win
So here's what happened. Dr. Pepper has been soaring in popularity while Pepsi has been losing market share. This is a pretty big though, because in 2004 Dr. Pepper was actually tied with Sprite all the way down in sixth place. This appears to be a clear, clean win for Dr. Pepper but only by the smallest of percentages (some call it a statistical tie). As for number one, "Coke Is It". Dr. Pepper and Pepsi's 8.3 percent (each) of the market is still dwarfed by Coca-Cola coming in at 19.2%
Varieties
Keep in mind that these numbers are for the products mentioned and not the variants. This means Diet Coke is not counted in with Coca-Cola, and the new Dr. Pepper Coconut products would not count towards the total.
