Texas Tech’s famous tortilla-throwing tradition took a road trip to Houston — and it didn’t end well.

A family from Abilene was temporarily kicked out of the Red Raiders’ road game after their children were caught tossing tortillas into the air. The family insists they didn’t even bring any; the kids simply picked up others’ tortillas and threw them again. For those familiar with Tech culture, that’s what you might call “learned behavior.” Thankfully, a kind supervisor eventually allowed the family back to their seats.

Tech Fans Should Be On Their Best Behavior Because They Represent The School

We could argue about this tradition all day. Some Tech fans love it, others despise it — but love it or hate it, it’s part of the game-day identity in Lubbock. Still, there’s a time and place for everything. Think about it this way: I don’t like taking off my shoes when I visit a friend’s house, and it even causes me foot pain — but that’s their rule, so I do it anyway. If another stadium doesn’t allow outside food, drinks, or flying flour products, maybe don’t bring them (or re-throw them) inside. It’s just basic hospitality.

Texas Tech Fans And Teams Can Get In Big Trouble At Away Games

Rules are rules. Nearly every venue says “No outside food or beverage,” and there’s no fine print that says “unless you plan on launching them.” Tossing tortillas may be fun in Lubbock, but doing it somewhere else can and will get you tossed yourself.

Red Raider Nation has the power to build something even stronger than the tortilla toss — a reputation for class, sportsmanship, and dominance on the field. Let’s be the team that wins hearts and games, not the one cleaning up after snack-based celebrations. Respect other people’s houses, then beat them fair and square in their own backyard.
