The End

The short version of all of this is if your kids are affected, you already know. After a long process the decision was made to close and consolidate some Lubbock schools. Declining enrollment, a budget deficit, and a lack of funds from the state were cited as the concerns. As far as the schools closing and the reassignment of students, well that's a tiny bit complex, but the fine folks at Everything Lubbock have you covered with that information.

The Process

What I actually wanted to speak on was, how heartless and soul-crushing the process was. At last nights meeting it was apparent that "the fix was in" and nothing was going to change the decisions that were made before anyone opened the doors. I don't understand why this process couldn't have happened in a way that wouldn't be so upsetting.

False Hope

On hand for the meeting were little cheerleaders cheering for thier schools to stay open. Students addressed the board members with stories about thier school families. Everything was set up like a Hallmark movie with a miracle just waiting to happen. Unfortunately, no official stood up and said, "You know what, these kids are right, let's fight for these schools!". Instead of the miracle moment the kids and parents were met with deaf ears.

Heartbreak

Change is always going to happen. Schools are going to close and others are going to be needed in other parts of town. Budgets are always going to be a problem. I'm going to admit I don't have the solutions for any of this, but there has to be a way to accomplish these things without giving kids false hope and breaking so many tiny little hearts.
