Truly Evil Texas Doctor Sentenced to 190 Years in Prison
A guiding principle for doctors and perhaps the most essential part of the Hippocratic Oath is to "do no harm." We have no option but to trust medical professionals with our lives and hope they will uphold this code of ethics, but unfortunately, that isn't always how it pans out.
60-year-old Texas anesthesiologist Raynaldo Riviera Ortiz, Jr., fittingly described as a "medical terrorist" was just handed a 190-year prison sentence for injecting heart-stopping poison into hospital IV bags, resulting in 11 cardiac emergencies among patients as well as the death of fellow physician Melanie Kaspar at Surgicare North Dallas.
Doctors testified during Ortiz's trial that they were puzzled by sudden spikes in blood pressure among their patients. This led them to compare medical records among those affected. It was determined that each of the 11 patients who experienced a sudden medical emergency had one startling thing in common when they fell ill: a brand-new IV bag.
Before they got to the bottom of the unexplained emergencies at the surgical center, anesthesiologist Dr. Melanie Kaspar unknowingly treated herself for dehydration with one of the IV bags Ortiz had contaminated. She died later that day.
Damning surveillance footage caught Ortiz tampering with the IV bag.
One victim described feeling "all chewed up" after experiencing the cardiac incident and said they had not felt the same since the day it happened.
Raynaldo Riviera Ortiz, Jr. waived all of his rights and was not present for his sentencing or any of the victim's impact statements. Instead, he opted for cowardice, the easier softer way.
Here's to hoping prison is very unkind to him.
