Here’s Some Unpopular Opinions About Texas Tech Football
The heat is on for Coach Joey McGuire, and maybe it shouldn't be.
Where We're At
Texas Tech Football has stumbled a bit to start the season and the boo-birds are really out in force. I'm going to tell you why we should stick with the Coach, but first I'm going to tell you where we went wrong.
The Heat Is On
There are more opinion's about football than even politics. After all, most political discussions tend to fall on or two sides, when there's any number of ways you could argue about football. Many will tell you that Tech's biggest mistake was firing Mike Leach. While I won't argue mistakes were made in the handling the prickly and eccentric coach, I'd say where we messed up was getting rid of Kliff Kingsbury.
The Mistake
Hold on before you come at me with your torches. Kingsbury had some okay years and some not-so-okay years. No matter what kind of year he was having, he was making headlines for the team. Kingsbury kept the team in the news, looking stylish, and playing a very fun, very fast form of football. People across the country were talking about Texas Tech and that's always a good thing.
NIL Changes Everything
NIL has changed the game and it can make it even harder on schools in smaller towns to be competitive. Kingsbury's brash and attention getting program could have really been paying off for Texas Tech right now. He could be attracting those speedster quarterbacks and receivers who want a lot of college yards on their resume. He would, of course, keep the team looking good which seems to mean a lot these days as well. Would we every play for the championship? Probably not, but we would always be in the conversation and probably responsible for more than a few upsets.
Coach McGuire
So, what does this do with Coach McGuire? For those not completely obsessed with the win/loss record, he is loved. People love his enthusiasm and love of the school and program. He is a booster and not just a coach looking for a stepping stone. He will keep the Red Raiders in the conversation. Tech fans always forget that getting a great coach is one thing, keeping one is WAY HARDER.
Stick It Out
So things are a little rough right now and they may get rougher, but I feel like we have a coach who will do the work to get better and stick with us if we stick with him. The Red Raiders need to have a little more love and a little more faith in their coach.
