Texas Tech and Matt Wells's commitment to the transfer portal is commendable. Wells saw a need to get older and deeper and he's certainly doing that with the addition of nine transfers joining the Red Raiders this offseason.

The latest is Robert Wooten who comes to Texas Tech after spending one season at Virginia Tech and getting a lot of playing time as a true freshman without a ton of production to show for it. Still, playing as a true freshman in 2020 is a testament to the ability of Wooten. He announced the move this afternoon via his Twitter account.

Wooten is a 6-foot-3 240 pound defensive end who will immediately join the rotation that is looking fairly deep for the first time in quite a while. The former Virginia Tech Hokie wasn't in the portal very long before coming to Texas Tech who recruited heavily out of high school when Wooten was at Stafford high school in Houston, Texas. He will have four seasons of eligibility remaining starting this fall.

The new Red Raider originally chose Virginia Tech over a huge list of potential offers including Missouri, Arizona, SMU, Houston, Arkansas, Cal, Arizona State, and Wisconsin among many others.

Wooten is the ninth transfer Matt Wells has signed this offseason including five more defensive transfers. The biggest defensive transfer being Duke grad transfer Marquis "Muddy" Waters. Also joining the Red Raiders are NC State's cornerback Malik Dunlap, Florida's linebacker Jesiah Pierre, UCLA cornerback Rayshad Williams, and Wisconsin safety Reggie Pearson.

Offensively Texas Tech added Oregon quarterback Tyler Shough, Troy wide receiver Kaylon Geiger and TCU offensive tackle TJ Storment.
