I quit watching football after Kliff Kingsbury got the heave-ho from Texas Tech. I was a big fan of Kingsbury's style, so I kind of checked out when he did. It's not a big deal, college fans check in and out all the time and some even switch favorite teams (shocking, I know). Apparently college football has got a little soft since I hit the bricks.

I am, of course, referring to the "Horns Down" hand sign.

Are we seriously concerned about that? How does that hurt anyone? That, of all things, is worthy of a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty? Seriously, if I was the Texas Longhorns I'd be embarrassed this is even a thing.

Don't get me wrong, I think all the showboating is dumb. Act like you've scored a touchdown or made a tackle before. You just don't need to jump up and down like you save the day in peewee football.

And the hand signals? Those are an extra layer of dumb for me. In fact, I remember being wholly embarrassed to make the "bear/cub claw" when they played the school song or whatever in Brownfield. You see, those hand signals, like the overly large and gross homecoming mums, are just a thing around here.

Still, despite my disdain for these practices to begin with, I can't believe that a hand sign has even been noted as unsportsmanlike. I have to be honest, back when I played people only got that for punching other players in the junk.
