The Metallica Marching Band Contest is wild, and we should be in it!

The competition is broken down into Collegiate Division 1, Collegiate Division 2, and High School Categories. Winners in those groups will receive $75,000, $40,000, and $15,000 respectively. There are even fan-voted competitions for colleges and high schools worth $10,000 each. As you can see, this is not chump change, not even to a Division 1 school.

While I'd like to see our area high schools get involved, I HAVE to pitch this idea to Texas Tech. The Goin' Band From Raiderland is one of the finest in the country. It's also my guess that they're a bit underfunded since they recently had to fundraise to buy new uniforms.

I guess at this point you can see how one plus one adds up. I know nothing of band schedules or anything like that, but if the band is currently practicing or available, why not practice a Metallica song? The band is even making the charts available.

The question then becomes, which song should they learn? Metallica has ten choices to choose from:

  • Creeping Death
  • Enter Sandman
  • Fade to Black
  • For Whom the Bell Tolls,
  • Fuel
  • Hit the Lights
  • Lux Æterna
  • Master of Puppets
  • One
  • Sad but True
  • “Seek & Destroy,”
  • The Unforgiven
  • Wherever I May Roam
So as the resident rock dude and strategist, I have some thoughts on this, then I'll let you vote your own mind. First off, eliminate "Master Of Puppets" and "Enter Sandman" because they'll probably get used too much. "The Unforgiven" and "Wherever I May Roam" are too slow and not rousing enough. "Creeping Death" and "Hit The Lights" are a little obscure. My thoughts on the remaining songs are, "Fuel" may also be a little too popular with other bands, "Fade To Black" and "One" are strong, but maybe not strong enough. I think the band would give you points for using the new song "Lux Aeterna", but my top three contenders are "Sad But True", "For Whom The Bell Tolls" and "Seek & Destroy".

So my selection is: "Seek & Destroy", because it's recognizable but there probably won't be a bazillion people using it. Then there's the little fact that the Texas Tech return team used the song for a while.  Anyways, you can vote on your favorite below and let's get word to Texas Tech that they 100% NEED TO DO THIS!
