Have there been a ton more movie stills being released lately, or is it just me? Not even Alien: Covenant’s trailer release stopped that account from posting more photos, and even more have arrived this week from the It remake to Ghost in the Shell. Today’s latest is from the upcoming Wonder Woman, one of the most anticipated movies of 2017, and sees the hero suited up in the middle of a battlefield.

As the best part of Batman v. Superman, Wonder Woman’s solo outing looks and sounds really exciting. We’ll be going back in time to the Great War and Diana’s origins as a superhero as she fights for justice and learns about the horrors of battle. The image comes courtesy of Empire.

Director Patty Jenkins also talked to the magazine about how the movie will focus on the horrors of war and act as a kind of coming-of-age tale for our hero.

What motivates her is philosophical. She isn’t just taking out bad guys or fighting crime. She believes in goodness and love. [She] is fierce and willing to fight, but only to protect a better vision for mankind. Hers is really a coming-of-age story.

My approach was to focus on telling the story of mechanized war and how that would look to a god visiting our world for the first time. I wanted the audience to understand the horrors that a war on this scale makes possible and how shocking that would be to someone who comes with a strong sense of honor and justice. She doesn’t realize yet just how senselessly dark the world can be.

World War I was the first time machines were primarily utilized and the last time the cavalry rode horses into battle. It was a war for the transitional period during the Industrial Age, when steam and coal and gasoline were replacing wind and wood. And for the soldiers caught up in that transition, sharing muddy trenches with diseased rats and the corpses of their friends, there was plenty to be horrified at. It’s a dark origin to have, but it matches up with Wonder Woman’s notions of peace and avoiding conflict. The Great War is a good time for her to learn how important that is.

Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, and Danny Huston, and hits theaters June 2, 2017.
