It appears that Ajuua's Mexican Grill ( 4930 S Loop 289 #250, formerly Freebird's World Burrito) is quietly rebranding in Lubbock, thanks to a few clues online and out in the real world. Ajuaa's first opened in 2023 and is still going strong in the Midland/ Odessa area.

Clues Ajuua's Is Making A Major Change

The first major clue is that Ajuaa's is listed as "Temporarily Closed" on Google, which is usually an indicator of major repairs, rennovations or a last hail mary before the restaurant closes for good.

The other clue is a lot more obvious: new signage on the side of the building. The sign says "Rubes" and is surrounded by a sports motif of a basketball, football, hockey stick, and baseball bat.

So to assume that Ajuaa's is either changing ownership or, in my opinion, more likely rebranding, seems like a safe bet. There is a Facebook page for Rubes, and the Ajuaa's Facebook has not been updated since last October.

Another Sports Bar In Lubbock?

Seems likely. Sports bars tend to do well here, and the building already has a large bar area and plenty of TVs. It could fill the gap in that area that was left at Hooter's departure in 2024. Sports bars do a great job of getting folks in to eat their favorite comfort foods, and get them to stay there drinking through the game.

Other Business In The Area

That area is a great shopping center- with Guitar Center, Chickie's Tasty Treats, The Hallmark Store, a dance studio, a salon, and of course, Rudy's BBQ. Welcome to Lubbock (and a great area) Rubes!
