It seems that Texas Tech has always been a team in search of a true rivalry.

Rivalry

Texas Tech and Texas had a pretty good rivalry going, unfortunately that was kind of a one way street. While Texas Tech fans hated Texas, Texas just thought of Texas Tech as another date on their schedule. Tech has tried to make "The Battle For The Saddle" with TCU a thing, but it doesn't seem to be something people talk about much. Now we have a real opportunity for a rivalry, but for now, we only play the team every other year.

The Team

Texas Tech's battle with Colorado and Coach Prime produced a ton of headlines. The Colorado coach was even featured on the front page of USA Today talking about all the things that were allegedly thrown at him. There is video of a Texas Tech equipment manager being pushed. There was also a trending photo of a tortilla that was autographed by the Colorado quarterback. Let's just say, this game has stuck in people's memories a lot longer than most due.

The Fans

As far as the fans go, yes there was a lot of stuff thrown. So much stuff was thrown that the Texas Tech coach had to get on the public address system and ask the fans to stop. Then there was the rage-bait incident over t-shirt licensing, which while dubious, certainly gave the game a higher profile. I just can't remember Tech and their opponent having more jaw-jacking before and after a game with an out-of-state team.

The Schedule

Texas Tech will not face Colorado again until 2026 when the team will visit the Buffalos. Then in 2027 the teams are not currently scheduled to play each other. At this time that's the furthest out the Big 12's Scheduling Matrix goes.  It's a terrible shame that these two teams aren't meeting on a regular basis because they certainly have heat with each other.
