Big In Texas: Where Is The Largest Lake In The Lone Star State?
Here's something fishermen, boaters, and swimmers can all agree on...bigger is better when it comes to lakes.
Texas Is A Land Of Lakes
Yes, don't snicker when you read that headline, Texas has its fair share of lakes. It's estimated that there are about 7,000 natural and man-made lakes in the Lone Star State. Of course, most of those lakes tend to be in central and eastern Texas (and everywhere that's not West Texas).
The Biggest Natural Lake
Lake Texoma comes in at 139 square miles of fun. To hit up this lake, you will be on the southcentral border with Oklahoma. The lake was created by the addition of the Denison Dam, but is still considered to be "natural".
The Biggest Lake Of Them All
The Toledo Bend Reservoir (can't we come up with a better name?) is the largest body of water in Texas. You'll also find this lake on the border with Louisianna, but it is more southwest of Shreveport. This massive lake takes up 289 square miles of Texas. Fishing fans probably already know it's a home for largemouth Bass, Crappie, Catfish, and more.
Two More Places To Visit
The Sam Rayburn Reservoir is also bigger than the biggest natural lake in Texas. It comes in at 179 square miles. It's southwest of Shreveport and Northwest of Baton Rouge Louisiana. If you're keeping it in Texas, it's about an hour and a half north of Beaumont.
I didn't want West Texas left completely out of this list, so if you're on that side of the state, give Lake Alan Henry a try. Coming in at 2,880 acres Lake Alan Henry is still an excellent choice for people who enjoy watersports and recreation.
