A longtime favorite at Six Flags Over Texas is officially sailing into history. The Conquistador, the iconic swinging ship ride that entertained generations of thrill seekers, has been retired from the park’s lineup.
The History of the Conquistador at Six Flags Over Texas
The Conquistador has "sailed" in the Spain section of Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington since its debut in 1981, according to the Dallas Observer. For many of us Texans, it holds a happy place in our memories. As a child, I loved it and always queued up multiple times in a row to ride the swinging ship. As an adult, I couldn't handle the nausea. Getting old, right?

Six Flags announced the retirement of the ride on Facebook, stating, "After exploring multiple options, we have decided that the Conquistador has officially sailed its last voyage."
Why the Ride Is Being Retired
Just judging from the context of the Facebook post above, it appears the ride is being retired to make room for a "record-breaking dive coaster in 2026." Considering that the La Vibora bobsled coaster is defunct, it stands to reason that Spain needed an overhaul anyway.

Some fans expressed skepticism, as The Conquistador is a relatively tiny ride that could be squeezed somewhere else; however, as someone who played hundreds of hours of Rollercoaster Tycoon, I can say with some faux-confidence that tough decisions have to be made when it comes to utilizing the finite space inside an amusement park.
