Copper Caboose Confirms Permanent Closure of Avenue Q Location
An iconic Lubbock restaurant has made it official: they are closed for good.
The Copper Caboose announced that they have permanently shut down their location just off Avenue Q in Lubbock.
The restaurant shared the news on Facebook late last night, expressing gratitude for employees past and present who have been part of the Copper Caboose family.
A New Copper Caboose Location May Be Coming Soon
While the closure brings sadness for many loyal fans, the restaurant did hint at a “new location on the horizon.” That glimmer of hope may ease the blow for customers who aren’t ready to say goodbye to their favorite Tex-Mex traditions.
The Avenue Q restaurant carried the spirit of the original Copper Caboose across from Texas Tech. Together with the 50th Street Caboose, the brand introduced Lubbock to Tex-Mex favorites that are still beloved today.
Employees Were Caught Off Guard
Much is being made about the sudden closure without notifying employees. For any business, that is a difficult decision. While staff might pledge to stay until the end, there’s always the risk of no-shows or lowered morale once a closure is announced.
The truth is, there may never be a perfect way to close a restaurant. Going out “business as usual” can sometimes be the best of several bad—or heartbreaking—options.
A Legacy of Strong Standards
As noted in a previous article, the Copper Caboose and its staff deserve to hold their heads high. Despite being located in one of Lubbock’s tougher areas, the restaurant excelled in its final city environmental report, an achievement that carries significant weight in the restaurant industry.
Hopefully, future employers will recognize the excellent staff now available for hire.
A Reminder: The 50th Street Caboose Is Still Thriving
For those who miss the Copper Caboose, the 50th Street Caboose remains a top-notch dining experience. I visited yesterday, and the food and service were as strong as ever. If you’re craving that Caboose flavor, make the trip—you won’t be disappointed.
