Do We Need A Welcome To Lubbock Sign Now?
It's an honest question. Do we need to welcome people to Lubbock properly?
The Sign
The people of Wolfforth, no doubt suffering some kind of identity crisis, decided to erect a "Welcome To Wolfforth" sign. According to KCBD one of the Wolfforth officials present said, "It's nothing against Lubbock, we love Lubbock, but...(I won't bore you with the rest). It just seemed to me for somebody that has nothing against Lubbock, they sure made Lubbock the focal point of the conversation. Anywho, the sign is nice, but the giant stylized "W" looks like it's a market for a Westin Hotel or something. Okay, now that's out of the way, let's get to our city's lack of a sign.
Don't We Have One?
Some of you may counter that we do have "Welcome To Lubbock" signs, but they are these weird brown signs with a cotton boll on them, by the Lubbock Association Of Realtors, who didn't think that it might be a bad idea to use brown and remind everyone of how "not green" it is here. What I'm saying is, to the best of my knowledge, we don't have a gate-way type "Welcome To Lubbock" sign.
Do We Need One?
So is a sign like this even necessary? I'm going to come right out and say they're a nice touch, but since Wolfforth's comes off like somebody with an inferiority complex, ours would probably come off like someone trying to establish dominance (Yes, the sign is no different than your dog peeing on land to mark it's territory).
Where Would It Go?
One more thing, the most logical place for Lubbock to put some type of sign like this would probably not be at the city limits, but rather at the airport, and do we really want to say, "Welcome To Lubbock" then have people see the lack of scenery and/or junkyard lining I-27? The need for a sign seems completely unnecessary unless you can put your city's image in the best light or if your town is the size of Mayberry.
