If you ate at One Guy From Italy across the street from Texas Tech University, back in the day, there's a really good chance you ate food that was prepared by Dario Yocum's expert hand.

I can almost taste it now, a crust that had that perfect combination of crispy and chewy that can only be achieved by kneading and stretching the dough properly. The sauce was so flavorful, and the cheese and other toppings were obviously fresh and high quality. And the slices? Enormous. I always ordered two, but was never able to finish both.

And can we talk about the calzones? Again, absolutely huge, and generously stuffed with cheese, sauce and your choice of meats and veggies. But the proper thing to get was the Italian sausage. Yum.

During my first stint at Texas Tech, I would meet up with a bunch of friends there at least once a week. It was an affordable choice that everyone was always very happy with. I have very fond memories of that location.

Now we can all get that exact, perfect slice of pizza or giant calzone, as Dario is opening his own eponymous pizza place in the Shoppes on Milwaukee (6810 Milwaukee Ave.) shopping center. It appears that Dario's Pizza & Calzones will be open sometime in September, and signage is already up. I can't wait.

Sometimes I think, 'Lubbock can't possibly need another restaurant,' and then one comes along to prove me oh-so-very wrong. Although Dario's Pizza & Calzone isn't exactly new, I've held a place open in my heart for it for years.

The Original One Guy from Italy on University is open and has been operating in Lubbock for over 40 years. Their founder and the Original One Guy Jerry Mazzamuto is still working at this location.
