Father’s Day is just around the corner, which makes it a great time to ask: How are Texas dads doing these days?

Dads are expected to bring home the bacon, help raise the kids, and somehow keep their own mental health in check. Of course, moms carry a heavy load too—but with Father’s Day coming up, let’s look at how dads in Texas are holding up.

The answer? Not great. According to a nationwide study by Wallethub, Texas ranked 37th out of all 50 states plus the District of Columbia when it comes to father-friendliness. In other words, being a dad in Texas is what we’d call “no bueno.”

So, what’s bringing us down?

The study looked at 22 different indicators across four main areas: “Economic & Social Well-Being,” “Work-Life Balance,” “Child Care,” and “Health.” Texas landed in the 30s across most categories—but came in a dismal 42nd in the Health category.

What Texas Dads Need Right Now

So maybe this Father’s Day is a good time to actually give dad a break. Mow the lawn for him. Take him out for a meal. Let him have some time to recharge. Dads are often expected to be tough, stoic, and self-sufficient—but many are quietly struggling and would never admit it.

Oh, and a final note for our neighbors to the west: New Mexico ranked dead last—51st out of 51.
