First Hurdle Cleared Toward Construction of Indoor Shooting Range in Downtown Lubbock
The most high-profile item from Thursday's Lubbock City Council meeting was the discussion and vote on a zoning change request for a plot of land owned by former Lubbock Mayor and congressional candidate Glen Robertson (pictured) in downtown Lubbock.
Robertson is seeking to build an indoor shooting range, and gun store, at 1917 Texas Avenue. The council unanimously voted to approve the request to change the land's zoning to C-4, Specific Use for a shooting gallery.
Robertson said the range will be operated as a gun club with a retail component and public access. The business is slated to have hours of operation Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Sunday from Noon - 8 p.m.
Robertson also noted that law enforcement personnel could have 24-hour keycard access to the range. As far as the building itself, it will be designed by one of the two most prominent shooting range builders in the nation. Robertson said the range will have, "...ballistically rated walls (bulletproof) with soundproofing."
The project is slated to cost $2.5 million and eight jobs would be created for the Lubbock economy.
A Second Reading of the zoning change request will have to be approved before the zoning change fully goes into effect.
